Fret 1 is a musicianship resource with guitar activities suitable for children of approximately age 6+. It’s best used for small groups, but it will also work in a one-to-one context and is intended make music reading and instrumental learning attractive to young children. The pages are laden with colourful drawings and simplified notation, whilst techniques and musical concepts are demonstrated through pictures and cartoons. Relative pitch relationships are learned through the Kodály movable-do system, alongside rhythm syllables and stick notation.

There are 89 pages in the book which are meticulously illustrated and pedagogically structured. It should provide at least one or two years of material for beginners of the approximate age of six to ten.

Musical concepts, such as rhythm values, are taught using vivid graphics, drawings and metaphors which are intended to draw upon the child’s experiences and make the learning of music a happy experience that also makes sense.

Staff notation is taught using relative pitch relationships in a way which gradually prepares children for reading classical guitar notation. Instrumental techniques are demonstrated graphically too, so that now children and parents will have a visual reference for trivialities; such as how to hold a guitar, how to finger an A chord, or where the notes do-re-mi are under the fingers.

Right hand techniques are developed through simple accompaniment patterns to folk songs which are sung. Simultaneously developing their musicianship and the technique in a way that will prepare them well for the many classical guitar methods which are on the market, or indeed any other style of playing….
